Luke achieves silver medal success with his creative professional touch

Designing an eye-catching webpage, information booklet and an app in just three days has led to a Walsall student winning a silver medal. Luke Davies took part in World Skills UK’s graphic design competition sponsored by the Ideas Foundation.

The 17-year-old is now in the running to represent the UK in the international event taking place next year.

“Winning a silver medal was totally amazing,” said the student at Matthew Boulton College. “I’ve had work deadlines before but nothing as intensive as this. It’s showed me what I can achieve when I concentrate hard and push myself. I’m really glad I got involved.”

The competition’s design brief was set by the Ideas Foundation who encouraged the eight UK finalists to treat their work as a professional assignment being put together for a client.

“We wanted the finalists to bring their ideas to life across multiple communications channels, just as they would do if they were representing an individual or a business,” explained Deborah Davidson, Programme Manager at Ideas Foundation. “The standard of work from each competitor was incredibly high. Luke’s work ethic was particularly impressive so it will be exciting to see what he achieves in future.”

After he finishes his graphic design course, Luke hopes to study animation and special effects at university before pursuing a career in film.

“Being at World Skills and studying this course has taught me a lot about developing my ideas,” continued Luke.
“The whole competition experience was great. A lot of school students at the event came over to us and were really interested in what we were doing. It’s nice to think we might have inspired someone else to enter the competition and even take up a career in design.”

The WorldSkills Competition takes place every year in cities around the globe and is the largest international skills competition.
