Amy’s BMet Experience

BMet apprentice’s work at leading construction company, Lendlease, complements her business career goals

Business Administration Apprentice, Amy Strachan’s, career path at Lendlease has been given a boost thanks to her apprenticeship with BMet and the leading construction company.

Before starting her course based at Sutton Coldfield College in January 2022, Amy did part-time work with the construction company based in Perry Barr, via a “Kickstart scheme.” Her initial role was within the Social Value department.

Once her time on the scheme finished, Amy was offered a full time Office Manager role at the company. This opportunity in fact coincided with her starting her apprenticeship – a path that Amy decided to take, as she knew that the units would complement the work that she was currently doing.

Amy added: “The synergy of me starting my apprenticeship happened at just the right time for me! I first chose the course because I believed it was well suited to my role at work and would also be adaptable to any future role changes that could arise.

“I also had plans to transition back into a Social Value role when appropriate and thought that the course would be transferrable to this role when the time came.

“I have since started as a Social Value Assistant Manager and my course ties in effectively with my work.”

Amy is finding her apprenticeship, which is due to finish in July 2023, thoroughly rewarding We asked her some more questions to find out more about her positive career path:

Q – Why did you decide to go down the apprenticeship route?

“As I went straight into work after my A-levels rather than university, I decided I wanted to attain qualifications while I was already working with my organisation. I thought an apprenticeship would be beneficial, as this would be a good way to ease myself into studying, while working and whilst still attaining a beneficial qualification, before working my way towards a degree.”

Q – Explain a bit about your specific apprenticeship and how it all works….

“My course is a year and a half long. It consists of 17 units which I work towards over this time. These units consist of areas such as Record & Documentation Production, Communication, Adaptability & Responsibility, Professionalism etc.

As part of the course, I produce a portfolio consisting of evidence of the 17 modules, which also includes me being interviewed. In addition, I must create a project, about when I noticed a fault at work and had to find a positive outcome. I must present this project via presentation to an examiner. I will also have a multiple-choice exam, as well as a time log where I document all my off the job activities throughout the course at work.”

Q- How have you found your time at BMet?

“I have really enjoyed doing this apprenticeship with BMet college. I have received great support, and the course has been laid out for me clearly. I would choose BMet again.”

Q- Tell us a bit more about the support you’ve received at BMet

“The support I have received at BMet has been especially beneficial. My assessor makes my course easy to understand, and I find myself always looking forward to our next meetings. My assessor gives me the best advice as to how to achieve the most out of my apprenticeship.”

Q- How do/did you feel that the course catered to your needs?

“I have found that this course has benefited me in my role and enhances my work I deliver in the workplace, as it leads me to evaluate what I am producing and generate it to a better standard.”

Q- What have you particularly enjoyed during your time at BMet and what are your best experiences?

“I have enjoyed my meetings with my assessor, and I would say my highlight was my in-person observation. As I complete my course from either work or home, I do not find myself on campus at college, so having my assessor in my workplace was a pleasant change.”

Q- What are you going to do after your time here and what are your hopes for the future?

“My plan after I complete my level 3 apprenticeship, is to go onto a degree apprenticeship down the business route.”

Q- What advice would you give to other students wanting to attend BMet? Or that are currently here?

“To grasp the opportunity and seek to achieve the best out of your course. Take advantage and appreciate the support that BMet provide.”
