Health & Social Care Access to Higher Education

Access to Higher Education (Health and Social Care) is an intensive and challenging one-year course that will give you an overview of health and social care in the 21st century and help you to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed for university. Health care professionals, from all specialisms are considered to have the strength, compassion and skills to care the sick or for people suffering from mental health related illnesses. Nurses and other care professionals come from all walks of life and there has always been a great deal of demand for them. This course will include studies in Anatomy and Physiology, Professional Healthcare Practice and Healthcare Communication in addition to Study Techniques and Academic Writing.

The Health and Social Care pathway will focus on:

  • Health Studies
  • Social Policy
  • Essential Skills and Research
  • Psychology

You will also develop your ICT skills.

* Courses are free for 16-18s. Students aged 19 or over could be charged fees and is subject to a fee assessment. Learners on benefits in the majority of cases courses are also free. Fee assessments are completed at enrolment.

Course Length: 33 Weeks

For the full time course you must have a grade C/4 in GCSE maths & English. It is also advisable for students to undertake work experience in a health- related work environment prior to commencing study. Applicants need to be 19 years old or over.

This course is assessed by a combination of coursework and examinations.  Coursework may involve essays, presentations, reports/discussions and/or portfolios of evidence.

Most students progress to degrees in health-related professions including Nursing, Podiatry, Radiology and Midwifery.
