Dental Technology Diploma Level 3

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Dental Technology is a fully-recognised and accepted qualification for entry onto the GDC's register, meaning upon successful completion of this course you will be registered as a Dental Care Professional (DCP).This course is designed to allow you to develop your skills in all aspects of work carried out as a dental technician.  Practical elements are developed in our dental laboratories where you will gain knowledge of materials, techniques and equipment commonly found in the dental technology sector.

The course is taught by experienced, qualified and G.D.C. registered dental technology tutors in our new and fully equipped Dental Technology laboratories situated at City Campus.

Students study the principles and practical techniques of making appliances in the three primary areas of:

Prosthetics – Full and Partial Dentures

Orthodontics – Straightening and re-positioning teeth

Fixed Prosthodontics – Restoration of natural teeth

In addition the associated areas of Dental Public Health, the following areas will also be covered:

  • Dental Anatomy
  • Dental Biomaterial Science
  • Advanced Techniques
  • Medical Emergencies
  • First Aid
  • Law and Ethics

* Courses are free for 16-18s. Students aged 19 or over could be charged fees and is subject to a fee assessment. Learners on benefits in the majority of cases courses are also free. Fee assessments are completed at enrolment.

Course Length: 35 Weeks

You will need 5 GCSEs Grade C/4 and above including maths, English and science. A range of level 2 programmes may also be considered. In addition, you will need to provide evidence of good manual dexterity skills as well as promoting professional skills to meet the requirements of the General Dental Council and complete an Initial Assessment. Purchase of a dental technology hand tool kit and Personal Protective Equipment  is also required.

The Diploma is 100% course work and you will complete mainly practical projects, presentations, phase tests, reports and a portfolio.  There is a requirement for students to undertake a day per week  of work placement each year in a Dental Laboratory.  We place a strong emphasis on high levels of attendance and achievement. Our support team are here to help you get the best out of your course and you will be assigned an individual tutor. You will be assessed through a combination of coursework activities, such as short tests, reports, practical activities and projects.

Upon completion of the Diploma in Dental Technology you can continue onto the Extended Diploma in Dental Technology or FDSc Dental Technology , leading to GDC registration (General Dental Council).
