What will the apprentice be doing?
- Plant Care and Cultivation – Assist in the care and maintenance of a wide variety of plants, including sowing seeds and transplanting seedlings. Monitor and maintain plant health, including watering, feeding, and pruning. Help manage pests and diseases, ensuring healthy growing conditions.
- Propagation – Learn and assist with plant propagation techniques, such as seeding, cuttings and grafting.
- Maintenance of Nursery Facilities – Assist in the day-to-day operations of the nursery, including soil mixing, potting and maintaining cleanliness and organization of all nursery areas, tools, and equipment. Participate in the organization and maintenance of polytunnels and outdoor growing areas.
- Inventory Management – Manage and track plant inventory, including restocking and labelling.
- Plant knowledge – You will learn a deep understanding of different plant species, their specific needs and best practices for their care.
- Customer Service and Sales – Interact with customers, answering questions, assist and offer advice on plant selection and provide information regarding care requirements. Support the sales team during peak times, ensuring excellent customer service and handling transactions.
- Safety – Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment for yourself and your colleagues.
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
This is a Level 2 – Landscape Apprenticeship that includes the following:
- Mandatory Qualifications
- Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (1 Day course-Ofqual registered qualification)
- LANTRA Level 2 Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides or C&G Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Pesticides
- LANTRA Level 2 Award in Safe Application of Pesticides Using Hand-Held Equipment or C&G Level 2 Award in Safe Application of Pesticides Using Pedestrian Hand-Held Equipment
- An apprentice is expected to attend college at least 1 day a week at the Botanical Garden Study Centre
