Adult English and Maths (GCSE and Functional Skills)

At BMet, we believe that strong English and Maths skills are more than just subjects—they’re the golden thread to a brighter, more successful future. We understand that these core skills can open up opportunities you deserve to reach your goals, whether it’s to access higher level courses, apprenticeships, university or your dream job. At BMet we are ready to help you get to where you want to be with our range of free English and Maths courses*.

19 + English and Maths

For courses starting in September 2025, our course offer ranges from E3 – L2 courses (Functional Skills/GCSE) in English and E1 – L2 courses (Functional/GCSE) in Maths. If you would like to join one of these courses, please come along to our Open Enrolment starting in August where we will assess your level and advise you on the best course for you. Please be aware that courses do fill up quickly, therefore spaces may be limited and will depend on your initial assessment. Keep an eye on our website for the exact dates for each site. When you come to enrol, please bring any English and maths GCSE or Functional Skills qualifications you have.

English

BMet is here to help you strengthen and develop your English skills, build your confidence and help you unlock new opportunities, whether it’s to help find a job or to continue on your path for further learning. All of our courses help you to improve your skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. We offer Functional Skills courses from Entry 3 to Level 2, as well as GCSE. Each Functional Skills course includes a complementary Digital Skills course, equipping you with essential tools for the digital future. The course you will be offered will depend on your previous qualifications and an initial assessment.

Maths

Whether you’re looking to boost your confidence, gain a qualification, or simply feel more in control of everyday tasks like budgeting and saving, we’ve got a course for you. We offer a wide range of maths courses designed to help you:

  • Build essential skills for daily life
  • Improve your job prospects
  • Prepare for further study
  • Gain nationally recognised qualifications

Our courses include Functional Skills Maths (Entry Level 1 to Level 2) and GCSE Maths. The right course for you will depend on your previous qualifications and the results of an initial assessment, which helps us place you at the right level.

Please note, each course varies in length of time depending on your level of skill.

*Free if you have not yet achieved a GCSE grade C or 4 and above previously.

English – Functional Skills & GCSE (Adults)

Whether you’re looking to boost your everyday communication or gain a key qualification, we’re here to help.

Functional Skills English (Entry 3 – Level 2)

This course is ideal for fluent English speakers who want to improve their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. It’s designed to build confidence in practical, real-life situations – perfect for work, study, or day-to-day life.

Alongside your English course, you’ll also take part in a Digital Skills Development programme. This will help you build essential digital skills for everyday life, further study, and the modern workplace.

GCSE English Language

This course is aimed at learners who have recently taken GCSE English Language and are aiming to improve a grade 3 (D) to a grade 4 (C) or higher, or those who have just passed a Functional Skill level 2. It’s a great opportunity to enhance your qualifications and open up future study or employment options.

To help us place you on the right course, we ask all applicants to provide evidence of any GCSE or Functional Skills qualifications already achieved.

You will also be required to complete an initial assessment. This includes:

  • An interview
  • An online skills assessment
  • A short free-writing task

We’ll use this information to ensure you’re enrolled on the course that best matches your current abilities and learning goals.

Maths – Functional Skills & GCSE (Adults)

Whether you’re looking to build confidence with everyday numbers or gain a recognised qualification to support your career or further study, we’ve got the right course for you.

Functional Skills Maths (Entry – Level 2)

This course is ideal for adults who want to improve their maths for everyday life — from budgeting and shopping to helping children with homework. You’ll learn in a supportive environment at a pace that suits you. This will also provide you with the essential stepping stone skills you need to progress onto GCSE Maths.

GCSE Maths

Already feel fairly confident with numbers? This course is designed for adults aiming to achieve a grade 4 (C) or higher. It’s perfect if you need a GCSE for work, further education, or personal goals.

When you come to enrol, you’ll complete an initial assessment to help us place you on the right course for your current level and goals.
