English - Functional Skills & GCSE (Adults)

English (Matthew Boulton, James Watt, Erdington Skills Centre and Sutton Coldfield)
When you come to enrol, you will be given an initial assessment to determine your level. The level of course you are offered will depend on the outcome of this.

Functional Skills English (Entry – Level 2) – this course is for English speakers who would like to improve reading and writing skills and become more confident when speaking. You will work on the skills you need to move on in your studies or work.
This course is assessed by examination at different points in the year.

English Language GCSE – this course is designed for those who have taken GCSE English Language very recently but need to improve their grade D to a grade C or higher. Your written English will already be at a high standard and you will be able to read and understand fiction and non-fiction texts with accuracy and confidence, identifying the techniques writers use to guide a reader’s response and applying some of these in your own work.

English GCSE Online – these are flexible courses that run via live streams, lesson recordings and online assignments to be accessed at a time that suits you. There are weekly tasks that you are expected to complete to help you progress. You are also expected to attend in person to complete assessments and examinations.

Everyone is welcome and there are no entry requirements. You will see an advisor who will put you on the right course for you.

Delivery and Assessment

Depending on your level of study you will have a formal assessment which may be examination based.


You may be able to progress to a higher level programme.
