Town Council pledges support to first ever Accessible Community Games
Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Council is funding a new event to enable people with physical and learning difficulties to try new sporting opportunities.
Organised by the team behind the highly successful Sutton Coldfield Community Games, the first ever Accessible Community Games will take place at Sutton Coldfield College on Friday 26th April.
Participants will be able to try many different sports including wheelchair racing and basketball, archery, a climbing wall, problem solving, dance, martial arts, cycling and hockey.
Councillor Keith Ward is a member of the Amenities, Leisure and Community Services committee, which has granted £7,588 via the Community Grants process, to be spent on office and administration costs in the run up to the event.
He commented: “We believe the Accessible Community Games will be a very positive addition to our town and we are delighted to become a founding partner.”
“We are very pleased to provide this grant funding to help launch the Accessible Community Games. The health and wellbeing of residents in our Royal Town is an important priority for the Town Council. Physical activity is known to increase health and happiness and it is so important to create high quality opportunities for all members of the community to participate in sport.”
Dennis Kennedy is the founder and Chairperson of the Sutton Coldfield Community Games and is the driving force behind the new event. He said: “The Accessible Games has been a dream for a couple of years now and will offer inspiring physical activity to people with both physical and learning disabilities, using exactly the same model as the Community Games. We are extremely glad to have the support of Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Council to help bring this dream to a reality and we hope to grow the event year by year, building something very special.”
Jason Allen, Department Manager for Sport at Sutton Coldfield College said: “Inclusivity in sport is something we actively encourage across the college and so we are pleased to be hosting this event.
“The Accessible Games will be a fantastic addition to the activities taking place in the area next year. Many of our students will be keen to be involved.”
