Skills in spotlight on MP visit

Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary, Angela Rayner MP popped into see students at Erdington Skills Centre, today.

During the hour long visit, the MP had a tour of the skills centre, met budding apprentices and even tried her hand at bricklaying!

Angela Rayner commented: “I’ve had a brilliant visit to Erdington Skills Centre.

“Birmingham is one of Europe’s youngest cities and we need to embrace all of that talent and make sure we can retain it right here in Birmingham.”

Erdington Skills Centre offers full and part-time courses for young people and adults in bricklaying, plumbing, plastering, painting and decoration and electrical installation, as well as a range of maths and English courses. Also on offer is a range of free courses for the unemployed.

The exciting £4 million redevelopment of Erdington Skills Centre in 2015 created brand new, purpose built classrooms and workshops offering a wide range of work based and entry level courses for local people to develop their skills and improve their employment prospects.

Additional workshop space for students at James Watt College was created last month to accommodate local demand – that is going through the roof!

This is not the centre’s first brush with fame. Last month it made national headlines thanks to a mother and son duo.

BMet Principal and Chief Executive, Andrew Cleaves, said: “The recent interest in the skills centre has been phenomenal.

“It was fantastic to welcome Shadow Education Secretary, Angela Rayner, to the skills centre and to give our
students the chance to meet someone from Parliament.

“Everything we do at the skills centre helps to support our students, giving them the skills they need to help with future employment.”
