Insight into Law event held at the college to help propel students into law

Over 100 aspiring lawyers experienced a unique insight into the legal profession in November at an exclusive event at Matthew Boulton College.

Expert legal speakers and top lawyers were at the event covering all aspects of preparing learners for a rewarding career in law.

The inspiring event gave students tips on increasing their chances of academic success, completing applications for work experience and developing employability skills.

Highlights of the day included a speed dating style question and answer session – giving students the chance to speak directly with trainees and lawyers and learn from their experiences.

Speakers included Tamina Greaves, Senior Associate in Medical Negligence at Shoosmiths LLP Kishma Bolaji and Jahnel Davis, Paralegal at Harrison Clark Rickerby’s LLP. Other speakers were Rowan Jones, Solicitor Apprentice FBC Manby Bowdler LLP and Subhana Anhu , Chartered Legal Executive and Solicitor at Trowers and Hamlins.

The event was a resounding success as it provided students with an informed understanding of career opportunities and pathways.

Abiola Adeboyejo, one of the law lecturers at the college and one of the organisers of the event, said:

“It was an absolute pleasure to organise such an important event with Carly Prosser (Law Manager). It was hugely beneficial for us all to hear about traditional and new routes into law.

“Most of all, it was a fantastic opportunity to nurture the progression aspirations of our students – many of whom we believe have what it takes to become legal professionals.”

Current law and legal studies students at the college who are studying a wide range of law courses at Levels 2, 3, 4 and 5, alongside former law graduates from the college, thoroughly enjoyed the event.

Here are the reactions of some of the attendees:

Nineteen-year-old Ryan, a second year HND in Legal Studies student said:

“Events like this really open my mind, give me an insight into the legal landscape and to future career opportunities. No matter where you are from or your background, I now feel that people can make it in law, as long as they have the passion and ambition to make it!”

“I am so glad that I came today, as the speakers were fantastic and educated me about a range of things that are crucial to a career in law.

“I now know about a range of options that are available to me, particularly an apprenticeship route that I wasn’t previously aware of!”

Thirty-two-year-old Elizabeth, who is studying on the Access to HE in Law and Criminology course said:

“I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, as it was an invaluable opportunity to hear and learn from experts in the industry.
