UAL Digital Illustration, Animation and Concept Art Level 3

Digital illustration and animation are becoming the required skills needed to promote products and services and to create compelling storytelling. Digital marketing is becoming the primary source of advertising with the growth of social media. This has led to a demand for moving image content to engage the digitally savvy consumer. Alongside traditional drawing, digital tablets are an essential tool in the modern illustrator’s skillset.

This 2-year full time course is ideal for anyone looking to develop a broad range of creative skills to gain employment in this rapidly developing sector of the creative industry.

Over the two years you will develop the fundamental skills to enable you to apply both traditional and digital techniques in a series of projects as well as live industry placement projects set by employers.

You will develop illustration, animation and concept art skills through industry relevant techniques and mediums including: Digital Illustration and Concept Art; Digital, Traditional and Stop Motion Animation; Traditional Art Techniques and Life Drawing; Character Design and Storyboarding. The course will also explore current and future developments in the industry including an awareness of digital currency and NFTs.

You will also learn how use software such as Adobe illustrator, Procreate, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Animate and Krita in addition to practical sessions in drawing supported by art theory and ideas generation sessions.

Awarded by UAL Awarding Body you will achieve a UAL Level 3 Diploma and Extended Diploma in Creative Practice: Art, Design and Communication on completion of this course.

* Courses are free for 16-18s. Students aged 19 or over could be charged fees and is subject to a fee assessment. Learners on benefits in the majority of cases courses are also free. Fee assessments are completed at enrolment.

Course Length: 35 Weeks

You will need 4 GCSEs at C/4 or above including English or maths. Alternatively, you will need a Level 2 Diploma in a related subject at a Merit or Distinction grade. You will be asked to bring a portfolio of art and design work to interview to make sure this is the right course for you.

The course is 100% coursework and you will produce work in 2D and 3D and time based media, research projects, sketchbooks, design sheets, evidence folders and photographs recording processes.

After completing your Diploma you can progress onto a Foundation Diploma, Higher Education or employment. Depending on which area you specialise in, job opportunities include: Animation, illustration, storyboarding, concept art creation for film or video games. The course can also lead into graphic design, fine art and games design.
