Health and Social Care Extended Certificate AAQ

The Pearson Level 3 Alternative Academic Qualification BTEC National in Health and Social Care (Extended Certificate) is an Alternative Academic Qualification (AAQ) designed for post-16 students with an interest in health and social care and aiming to progress to higher education as a route to graduate level employment.

Equivalent to one A Level in size, it is suitable for students looking to develop their applied knowledge and skills in health and social care alongside two A Levels.

The qualification has three mandatory units covering the following topics:

Unit 1: Human Lifespan and Development – PIES and factors affecting growth and development, interventions and the different professionals providing care and treatment

Unit 2: Human Biology and Health – Human body structure and systems, normal physiological functioning and the impact of common disorders

Unit 3: Health and Social Care Practice – Core principles, values and legislation that underpin and influence health and social care, and the effect of social determinants on an individual health status

One further unit will be studied from the following choices:

Unit 4: Health, Social Policy and Wellbeing – Public health policy and its influences, including health-related organisations/groups and a range of strategic factors

Unit 5: Promoting Health Education – Health education, its purpose and use of different approaches and models to achieve positive health outcomes

Unit 6: Safe Environments in Health and Social Care – Appropriate provisions in services relevant to different needs; governance relating to safe environments

Unit 7: Health Science – Types of infections and their potential impact on a local, national and international scale.

* Courses are free for 16-18s. Students aged 19 or over could be charged fees and is subject to a fee assessment. Learners on benefits in the majority of cases courses are also free. Fee assessments are completed at enrolment.

Course Length: 35 Weeks

This Qualification has a minimum entry criteria that would work in combination with A-levels of 5 x Grade 4s at GCSE including GCSE Maths Grade 4 and GCSE English Language Grade 5.

50% of the total qualification GLH is made up of external assessment.

Unit 1 and Unit 2 are each assessed with an 80 mark External Examination set and marked by Pearson.

Unit 3 and the additional unit 4,5,6 or 7 are assessed internally via coursework

This Qualification can lead to progression onto a number of degree programmes allied to health and care. Examples include but are not limited to: Nursing, Social work, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Paramedic Science, Public Health, and Healthcare Science.
