Personal Training (Practitioner) YMCA Diploma Level 3

Who is this qualification for?
– Gym instructors wishing to work and/or seek employment in the health and fitness sector as a personal trainer on an employed or self-employed basis
– Those wishing to use the qualification as a platform for progression on to further learning, within the health and fitness or active leisure sectors

YMCA Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training (Practitioner) is regulated by Ofqual

Mandatory units;
– Applied Anatomy and Physiology
– Promoting wellness through client motivation and interaction
– Bespoke exercise programme design
– Customised exercise programme instruction and communication techniques
– Nutrition to support physical activity
– Business acumen for a successful Personal Training Practice

Key topics/skills/knowledge covered:
– Anatomy and Physiology required when exercise programming and design for a range of clients
– Effective communication and interpersonal skills
– Knowledge and understanding of commonly occurring medically controlled diseases and health conditions
– How to gather and analyse client information and establish their current health and fitness status.
– How to design and deliver a health and fitness programme suitable to an individual’s specific goals and level of fitness awarding excellence
– How to plan and conduct physical activity sessions within a variety of environments
– How to provide nutritional advice for physical activity based on a client’s needs
– How to prepare for employment, as personal trainer, on either an employed or selfemployed basis

Entry Requirements

Suitable background in personal training and gym usage would be advantageous. You will also need to have good communication skills and a keen interest in the fitness industry, with a competent degree of physical fitness. A positive reference with good levels of attendance and punctuality may also be required.

Delivery and Assessment

Our course is internally assessed where students must complete a portfolio of evidence, a practical demonstration/assignment and coursework. You will also be required to sit a multiple choice exam paper which is also assessed internally.


This qualification can lead to employment as a personal trainer or progression to other qualifications at the same and higher levels.
