Course overview

This course introduces you to the theory and practical application of sport and exercise science in a variety of environments. You’ll learn in classrooms, fitness gyms, sports halls and massage suites, and use online materials to support your personal study. You may also have the chance to gain additional qualifications such as sports massage therapy, fitness instructing, or taping and strapping to boost your employability.

What this course covers

In Year 1, you’ll study Anatomy & Physiology, Fundamentals of Sport & Exercise Psychology, Injury Prevention, Nutrition, Physical Activity, Lifestyle & Health, Professional Skills, Sports Massage, and Coaching Practice & Skills Development. In Year 2, modules include Leadership & Management, Performance Analysis, Exercise Prescription, Strength & Conditioning for Coaching, Research Project, Sports Rehabilitation, and Work Experience.

Entry Requirements

You’ll need a minimum of 48 UCAS Tariff points (e.g. MPP in a sport-related qualification such as BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport or A Level PE), plus GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above. Mature applicants (aged 21+) with relevant experience are welcome and may be asked to complete a short task. All applicants will attend a formal interview.

Progression Opportunities

After completing the HND, you can progress to employment in the sport and fitness industry or apply to university to top up to a full BSc (Hons) degree. Career paths may include sports rehabilitation, fitness development, coaching, or health and lifestyle promotion.

Delivery And Assessment

You’ll be assessed through a variety of methods including presentations, practical demonstrations, poster presentations, timed assessments, written reports and a dissertation. Assessments are designed to reflect real-world scenarios in sport and higher education.
