Course overview
You’ll gain hands-on experience in a school or nursery while studying key topics such as safeguarding, child development, and supporting education. The course is designed to prepare you for employment or further study, with support from expert tutors and our dedicated careers team.
Course details
You should be at least 16 years old with five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language, Maths, and Science. A high grade 3 in Maths may be considered with a successful interview.
Assessment includes a mix of written exams and coursework. At the end of Year 2, you’ll receive an overall grade of Distinction, Merit, Pass, or Ungraded.
You can progress to a higher-level teaching assistant (HLTA) role or continue your studies to become a fully qualified teacher. For more information on teaching pathways, visit Get Into Teaching.
In your first year, you’ll study a wide range of topics including the wider context of education, supporting learning, safeguarding and wellbeing, behaviour management, working with families and professionals, child development, observation and assessment, reflective practice, equality and diversity, special educational needs and disabilities, and English as an additional language. These units are designed to give you a strong foundation in both theory and practice.
