BMet student experiences to be seen, heard and valued during Learning Disability Week
BMet College is proudly supporting Mencap’s Learning Disability Week once again by showcasing positive activities from students with a variety of inclusion support needs.
From today (Monday June 15th) until Sunday 21st, the special awareness week theme “Do you see me?” will be brought to life across the college’s social media channels.
The campaign highlights the importance of being seen, heard and valued, enabling students and staff with learning disabilities, learning difficulties and neuro-divergent conditions to have a voice and share their personal stories.
One of the highlights of the week is a continuation of footage of BMet’s very own version of the hit TV show The Assembly.
The student-led video series puts learners in the spotlight as they pose real questions to staff across the college – bringing personality, curiosity and humour into the conversation, while promoting visibility and inclusion in a format that’s fun and relatable.
Other featured moments include:
- Showcasing artwork of students across BMet’s colleges, who have inclusive support needs.
- A behind-the-scenes look at BMet’s popular Dungeons and Dragons Club.
- Students creating their very own “day in the life” videos.
- Highlighting BMet’s supported internships.
- Publicising the success of students in BMet’s Pan Disability sports clubs.
Learning Disability Week is organised annually by the UK’s leading learning disability charity, Mencap– which aims to improve the quality of life for individuals with learning disabilities.
This is done by raising awareness of important issues, fighting stigma and discrimination and by raising funds for outreach and support programmes.
Speaking of the campaign, Sam Coles, Equality and Diversity Manager at BMet said: “Learning Disability Week is such an important date in the diary for us, that enables us to raise awareness and celebrate people with a range of inclusion support needs.
“It is a pleasure for us to shine a light on our community of learners and staff who have such great potential to do well, with the right support.”
The special occasion is a great opportunity for BMet to support a cause that is relevant to their communities of students, staff and partners – many of whom have inclusion support needs themselves.
It will also be a chance for BMet to showcase student journeys, highlight successes and to educate people about Learning Disability Week.
