Apprenticeships allow you to achieve an industry-recognised qualification while working, demonstrating to employers that you have both the practical experience and the formal knowledge needed for your role.
Apprenticeships give you the chance to learn directly from experienced professionals while you work, gaining insider knowledge and practical insights that can’t be taught in a classroom.
APPRENTICESHIP FAQs
An apprenticeship is a real job with training. You’ll:
- Work alongside industry professionals
- Learn skills on the job
- Study for a recognised qualification
- Earn a wage and holiday pay
The length and entry requirements depend on the level and subject area you choose.
Not sure which path is right for you? You can start with a full-time course to explore a subject, then move into an apprenticeship once you’re confident about your career direction.
It depends on the programme.
- Some apprenticeships take 12 months
- Others, especially higher-level ones, can take up to 4 years
At BMet, apprenticeships usually last between 1–4 years.
Most of your time will be spent in the workplace. Depending on the programme, you might:
- Work 4 days a week and spend 1 day at college
- Do a block release (time in college followed by time in the workplace)
- Be taught solely in the workplace with an assessor visiting you
- Study in a virtual classroom for remote learning
Your course team will confirm how your apprenticeship is delivered during your interview.
Apprenticeships can begin any time of year.
- Some start in September, alongside the academic year
- Others begin as soon as you’re signed up with an employer and enrolled with us.
Even if September has passed, you haven’t missed your chance. Get in touch to see what’s available.
Pay depends on your employer.
- Some pay the apprentice national minimum wage
- Others pay a higher salary, depending on the industry
Check the job description before applying — pay and hours will always be listed.
Apprentices usually work a minimum of 30 hours per week.
Your hours and work pattern are set by the employer, so check the advert carefully before applying. If you’re unsure, ask at your interview.
Requirements vary by level and subject.
- Most programmes ask for at least a GCSE grade 4 (C) in English and Maths
- Some may need additional qualifications
Check the course page for the exact entry requirements for the programme you’re interested in.
