GOVERNANCE AT BMET

Birmingham Metropolitan College (BMet) is governed by a Corporation made up of members from the local community, along with staff and student representatives. The Corporation operates under the Instrument and Articles of Governance set by Parliament for Further Education institutions in England. BMet is also an exempt charity under the Charities Act 2011.

The Corporation ensures the strategic oversight and accountability of the College. It meets at least once per term, supported by committees focused on:

  • Audit
  • Finance
  • Academic Standards & Quality Development

Each committee reports its recommendations to the full Corporation for approval.

MEMBERSHIPS

Members are appointed for up to four years, with the possibility of reappointment. The Governance and Search Committee considers appointments (other than staff and student members) and recommends candidates to the Corporation. Membership is designed to ensure the Corporation has the skills necessary for effective governance, with vacancies filled through recommendations or public advertisement.

  • Members receive no payment for their services, but travel and out-of-pocket expenses for attending meetings can be claimed.
  • All governors declare their interests, which can be viewed on request via the Company Secretary at Stephen.Belling@bmet.ac.uk.
