Honouring My Community: Vee’s Story

My roots are Barbadian. My community is Birmingham. My faith is my foundation. My purpose is to serve, love and lift others.

For Black History Month 2026, I am reflecting on the people, places and values that have shaped me, and the importance of celebrating our heritage, supporting our communities and creating opportunities for others.

Heritage and Identity

I am proud of my Barbadian heritage and my identity as a Black woman. The colours blue and yellow, alongside the black broken trident of the Barbadian flag, hold particular significance for me.

I am passionate about celebrating Black history, culture and achievement, and recognising the contributions that Black communities make to society.

Family and Faith

As a wife of 39 years, mother, grandmother, sister and auntie, family keeps me grounded. My Christian faith is also central to my life, guiding me in how I treat others and reminding me of the importance of compassion, kindness and respect.

These values shape how I approach my work, my relationships and the support I offer to others.

Supporting Students Through Inclusive Support

Since 2016, I have supported students within the Inclusive Support Team at BMet College. More recently, I have taken on the role of Job Coach within the Supported Internship Programme, helping students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) to develop confidence, independence and employability skills.

I also support students through MB17s enrichment activities, encouraging them to enjoy singing, express themselves and build friendships. We have performed publicly at four college events, creating opportunities for students to share their talents and grow in confidence.

Community and Mentoring

Supporting my wider community is important to me. I am a longstanding supporter of St Basils, fundraising alongside staff and students to help young people who are experiencing, or are at risk of, homelessness.

I am also active in the BAME Network and student mentoring, helping to promote inclusion, representation and positive opportunities for others.

My Impact and Legacy

I am committed to helping others feel valued, supported and empowered. Whether through my work with students, my involvement in the community or the values I share with those around me, I want to make a positive difference.

I am proud to help inspire future generations through faith, heritage, service and kindness.
