BMet named as “best placed” regional winner in Sustainability

BMet College has officially proven again that the environment and sustainability are top priority, by finishing 10^th nationally and gaining the “best-placed college” title in the Midlands at the Planet Earth Games.

The annual competition challenges organisations from across the UK to test their knowledge and understanding of sustainability, by devising activities to reduce negative impacts on our environment.

Over 130 BMet students and staff across curriculum areas participated and registered a total of 2,500 points, demonstrating the college’s commitment to sustainability, wellbeing and environmental action.

Successfully completed tasks involved a diverse range of activities, including Wellbeing Walks, Re-wilding, Plogging (combining litter picking and jogging), hiking, outdoor pursuits, carbon footprint analysis, sustainability t-shirt design, Meat-Free Mondays, recycling initiatives and pledges to use alternative methods of travel to college.

A key highlight was when BMet’s Ability Counts Football team proudly wore the first sustainable material football kit at the AoC National Sports Championships. This was alongside team building and hiking in the Malvern Hills and cycling at Sutton Park, which showcases BMet’s dedication to active and eco-friendly lifestyles.

These such initiatives have helped to raise awareness of environmental sustainability among BMet’s student and staff community and encourage them to take real steps towards supporting the college’s drive towards eco-friendly solutions.

Speaking of BMet’s success, Jason Allen, Department Director for Sport at the college, who oversaw the various college projects said: “The team success in the Planet Earth Games is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students and staff. They are passionate about environmental issues and are committed to making a difference in the world.

“Looking ahead, we are excited to confirm plans to participate again next year, with the Planet Earth Games running from January 2027 and culminating on Planet Earth Day, April 22, 2027. The college is aiming for even greater staff and student involvement, building on this year’s record momentum!”

Many departments across BMet are continuing with sustainability projects throughout the summer term, ensuring that environmental efforts remain ongoing and impactful.

The college encourages like-minded organisations to consider how they can incorporate the next Planet Earth Games into their businesses. The aim is to “work together to make BMet’s sustainability journey even stronger!”
