BMet honours its communities during Black History Month
BMet College is celebrating the contributions and experiences of its Black student, staff and partner communities during October as part of Black History Month.
This year’s national theme – Honouring our communities – serves as a tribute to the dedication, resilience and unsung contributions of Black individuals who build, protect and inspire local communities every day.
Throughout October, students and staff across BMet’s colleges will explore themes including identity, belonging, family, culture, community and aspirations through a programme of activities, discussions and student-led content.
Activity will include student and staff conversations about community and representation, cultural events across the colleges and contributions from BMet’s BAME Staff Network, Student Experience Team and external community partners.
The awareness month will show the critical impact made by everyday heroes, for example, professionals, mentors or grassroots volunteers. It is also an opportunity to recognise those who have historically anchored our communities while looking forward to a future of continued empowerment, unity and growth.
BMet is home to a diverse community of students and staff, including many from Black African and Caribbean backgrounds. In full support of the campaign, the college is providing a platform for its diverse community to express their thoughts, reflections and stories through its internal and external communication channels.
Pat Carvalho, Principal and CEO at BMet said: “Black History Month is a great opportunity for us to celebrate the people and communities that make BMet and Birmingham places to be proud of.
“Honouring our communities includes shining a light on the dedication, care and leadership that Black individuals contribute to British life every day, while continuing our work to break down barriers and advance real, lasting change within education.”
As an active anti-racist college, BMet is dedicated to fostering an educational environment that does not just acknowledge Black history in October, but embeds inclusivity, equality and student voice into its core values year-round.
Stories from BMet students, staff and partners will be shared across the college’s social media channels throughout October.
