BMet celebrates student success and new Alumni Network launches at annual awards ceremony
BMet welcomed students, families, staff, governors and employer partners to its annual Student Awards Ceremony this week, celebrating the achievements of learners from across Matthew Boulton College, James Watt College and Sutton Coldfield College.
Held at Birmingham Botanical Gardens, the event recognised students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement, resilience, leadership, commitment and contribution to college life.
Guests also heard from special guest Ashley Fongho, member of chart-topping group Rak-Su, who shared his personal journey and encouraged students to never give up, embrace opportunities and have the confidence to step forward when opportunities arise.
A total of 54 awards were presented throughout the evening, including curriculum awards, Values Awards, Alumni Awards, the Valedictorian Award and Employer of the Year.
Here’s what some of BMet’s winning students had to say:
Adil, former Gas Engineering Apprentice at James Watt College – an alumni award recipient:
“I feel very happy that my hard work has paid off, it means a lot! I have received a lot of support at BMet and the teaching standard has been excellent, which I have carried through to my work at Currys.”
Lakshay, Dental Technology Student at Matthew Boulton College – a HE student of the year award recipient: “I am so pleased to have achieved what I have and am so thankful to my teachers and peers for supporting me along the way. I am looking forward to doing a degree in the future.”
Denisa, Sports Coaching Student at Sutton Coldfield College – a sports student of the year award recipient: “It has been an amazing two years for me at the college and this day to recognise student achievements is fantastic. I am now planning to study sports rehabilitation at Nottingham University.”
The ceremony also marked the official launch of the BMet Alumni Network, a new initiative designed to reconnect former students with the college, celebrate their achievements and inspire the next generation of learners.
BMet’s Values Awards recognised students who embody the college’s values through their actions, leadership and support for others. The Alumni Awards celebrated former students who have gone on to make a positive impact in their professions and communities, while the Valedictorian Award recognised an exceptional student whose achievements, dedication and commitment have set them apart during their time at BMet.
Zoe Lee, Director of Marketing, Communications and Work Experience at BMet, said: “Student Awards is one of the most important events in our calendar because it shines a spotlight on the incredible achievements of our learners.
“Every award tells a story. Some celebrate academic excellence, others recognise leadership, resilience, determination or the difference students make to those around them. Together they reflect the talent, ambition and potential that exists across BMet.”
The celebration featured performances from BMet students throughout the evening, including an opening rendition of The Greatest Show, alongside special effects including cold spark fountains and student-led presentations.
In keeping with the spirit of the awards, students played a central role in the event, helping to launch the new Alumni Network, present the Alumni Awards, Values Awards and Valedictorian Award, and share in celebrating the achievements of their peers.
The approach reflected BMet’s commitment to ensuring the awards remain a celebration of students, by students, showcasing not only academic success but also the creativity, confidence and talent that exists across the college community.
Principal and CEO Pat Carvalho said: “Our Student Awards celebrate the very best of BMet. They recognise not only achievement, but also the commitment, perseverance and ambition that help students succeed.
“I would like to congratulate every winner, finalist and nominee. They should be enormously proud of what they have achieved and the example they set for others.
“The launch of our Alumni Network was another important milestone, strengthening the connection between past, present and future students and highlighting the lifelong impact of a BMet education.”
The evening also celebrated Employer of the Year, recognising the vital role employers play in supporting student success and creating opportunities for future talent.
