Applied Science Level 1

This one-year introductory course is perfect if you’re interested in science and want to build your confidence and skills in a supportive environment. It’s designed to help you develop practical knowledge and prepare for progression to a Level 2 science programme.

Course overview

You’ll study a mix of core and science-specific units that focus on personal development and vocational skills. The course includes practical activities and projects that introduce you to biology, chemistry and physics in everyday contexts.

What this course covers

All learners complete core units that develop essential transferable skills, including research and planning, time management, and working effectively with others. In addition, learners study a range of sector-specific units. These units provide a broad introduction to the skills and knowledge relevant to the sector and are designed to be practical and engaging. In applied science, for example, learners explore topics such as analysing crime scene evidence, measuring waves used in technology, and investigating variation in plants and animals.

Entry Requirements

You’ll need four GCSEs at grade 2, including Maths and English. If you don’t have formal qualifications, you can still apply—entry will be based on an initial assessment and a tutor reference.

Progression Opportunities

After completing this course, you can progress to a Level 2 BTEC in Applied Science or other vocational programmes. It’s a great first step towards a future in science or related fields.

Delivery And Assessment

Each assignment is graded as Pass, Merit, or Distinction, and an overall qualification grade of Pass, Merit, or Distinction is awarded based on the total points achieved across all units.
