James celebrates higher level learning success

James Bradbury completed a Higher National Diploma (HND) in health and social care at Stourbridge College and has progressed to an adult nursing degree at the University of the West of England, Bristol.

The 20-year-old reflected on his achievements at the college’s higher education graduation ceremony which took place at Birmingham Town Hall.

“My HND fully prepared me for university,”said James from Pedmore. “I gained research and writing skills through my classroom and independent studies, while the practical aspects of my course showed me what being a healthcare professional actually involves.

“Having made it to the final year of a full honours degree, I’m optimistic about my career prospects. I firmly believe that if you want a particular job and enjoy what you do then there will always be a job available.”

James was inspired to pursue a healthcare career after completing some work experience at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

“I’d finished my A Levels in Film Studies, Product Design and Geology and realised I didn’t want to carry on studying these subjects,” James continued. “I fell in love with the working environment at the hospital straightaway. I then completed a work placement in a care home during my HND and haven’t looked back since.”

Over 160 students studying diploma, foundation and full honours degree programmes from the Black Country and Birmingham accepted their awards at the college’s graduation ceremony.

Andrew Cleaves, Principal at BMet said: “Our graduation ceremony recognised the hard work of our students as well as the families, friends and teaching staff that supported them on their way to success. It’s incredibly rewarding for the college to inspire and train people for the in-demand jobs and specialist roles that our industries need.

“Congratulations go all our graduates, along with our very best wishes for their future careers.”

Stourbridge College’s higher education courses are delivered in partnership with local universities including Birmingham City University, Staffordshire University, the University of Wolverhampton and the University of Worcester.
