Double award recognition for engineer and student governor, Daniel

BMet’s student governor, Daniel Millington is celebrating double apprenticeship award success. The technician at Hydraforce Ltd received the runner-up award for EEF (Engineering Employer’s Federation) Apprentice of the Year for the Midlands. He is also the Rolls-Royce Regional Advanced Apprenticeship Award winner in the National Apprenticeship Service Awards 2018.

Daniel who graduated from his engineering apprenticeship in July this year, said he was “absolutely thrilled” by the awards.

“It’s great to have had this industry recognition and I’m honoured that Hydraforce continue to support my career”. The 23-year-old from Sedgley in Dudley continued: “I chose my apprenticeship as I’ve always been thoroughly interested in the manufacturing and engineering sectors.

“I hope to gain my engineers status in the near-future with the aspiration of working up to a senior managers’ level.”

After completing his apprenticeship a year earlier than expected, alongside his Foundation Degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Daniel has since been promoted to role of Engineering Technician within the Aston Hall, Birmingham-based company. He is now in the second year of his Foundation Degree at BMet and aims to study towards his full honours degree in the future.

“We are immensely proud of Daniel. He is a shining example of the value of apprenticeships within a business and the contribution of our young people,” says Christine Tolley, Head of Human Resources at HydraForce. “Not only that but he also shares his knowledge and expertise with other young apprentices who are just starting out, which is testament to his passion for engineering.”

HydraForce’s four-year apprenticeship scheme has run since 2004 and sees the apprentices study at BMet full-time for their first year. In their second year, apprentices work on-site at HydraForce in different areas of the business, with a day release to college to continue their studies. The current apprenticeship scheme gives the candidates the opportunity to achieve their BTEC, with the company sponsoring them to go onto either HNC or Foundation degree.

“We couldn’t be more pleased for Daniel and the way he has continued to progress,” said BMet Principal, Cliff Hall. “The fact that he has achieved award recognition as an advanced apprentice proves how much he has continued to strive in every aspect of his career. As a student governor he is keen to develop the learning experiences of all our apprentices. This is another dimension to his expertise going forward.

“We look forward to seeing where his soaring career takes him next.”

HydraForce celebrates its thirtieth year in Birmingham this year, after first being established in Chicago, USA in 1985. The Birmingham site is the European Headquarters of the business and is in its third factory since its establishment in Birmingham in 1988. It remains a privately-owned company, with manufacturing facilities across the world, including Birmingham, North America, Brazil and a manifold assembly plant in Asia.

The company designs and manufactures high performance hydraulic fluid power cartridge valves, custom manifolds and electro-hydraulic controls. Growing at a rapid rate, the company has a predicted turnover of £112m for 2018.
