BMet GCSE students are celebrating
It’s a time of celebration for hundreds of BMet GCSE students who have collected their results today (Thursday 23 August).
The GCSE pass rate at the college this year is 93%, 4% above the national pass rate and demonstrates what a great opportunity BMet offers to many students to gain qualifications that will allow them to go on and progress in their studies or chosen career path.
“Many of our students have come to us without a GCSE English or maths pass and we have helped them achieve great grades to go on to university, employment or start an apprenticeship,” said Andrew Cleaves, Principal and Chief Executive at BMet.
“These results prove that whatever learning stage you are at, it’s never too late for you to gain your GCSEs and follow career ambitions. “Well done to our students and staff for everything they’ve achieved this year.”
With a Grade 5 and Grade 4 in her English Language and Mathematics GCSEs, Lamisa Huda is excited about moving up to a Level 3 art and design course at Matthew Boulton College. “I only completed six months at Year 11 as I’d just come into the country,” said the 17-year-old, who studied the course with her GCSEs. “Having another opportunity to get my qualifications has made me very happy. The college environment is good for learning in your own way. I’ve always had great support.”
And the second chances aren’t just for school leavers. Former army officer, Ruben Lawrence was delighted by his grade 6 in English which means he can enrol on an Access to Science course. “My heart’s set on a career in medicine,” said the 27-year-old. “It’s something I can keep learning about. Plus it leads to a career I can do for the rest of my life.
He continued: “My school experience wasn’t a good one. I went straight into the army, spending four years in the Grenadier Guards Household Division. When I left, I thought hard about what my passion was and what I could achieve. That meant coming back to study.
“I’m really enjoying my time at the college. I’ve been mentored by teachers that have shown me that if you’re willing to put the work in you can go above and beyond what you first thought was possible.”
Enrolment is now open at James Watt College, Matthew Boulton College, Stourbridge College and Sutton Coldfield College.
GCSE students can receive careers advice, meet teachers from different courses and find out about apprenticeship vacancies. They can also learn more about support services available to sixth form students.
“For those school leavers that perhaps did not get the grades they want I hope our student experiences resonate with them and inspire them to continue with their learning journey,” continued Andrew Cleaves.
“If you’re in this position then we’re here to reassure you that whatever you are hoping to do, we have a sixth form course to suit you. We also offer resit opportunities for GCSE English and maths.”
