Horticulture or Landscape Operative Apprenticeship

BMet delivers the Horticulture Operative Apprenticeship. This course is delivered at both Matthew Boulton College and the Botanical Gardens, located in Edgbaston Birmingham.

Horticulture Operatives can be employed to work in public parks and gardens, green spaces and historic gardens, private gardens and estates or in production nurseries and retail outlets, focusing on plant propagation and plant growth and identification. Many businesses will be specialised in their activities. Soft- landscaping includes the establishment and maintenance of plants and cultivated areas.
The employment area will dictate the option pursued.

Core Qualifications
The following qualifications will be required prior to taking the end point assessment:

• Emergency First Aid: Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work.
• Pesticides: Level 2 Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides Guidance OR Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Pesticides
• English & maths: Apprentices without level 2 English and maths must achieve level 1 and take the test for level 2 before taking the end-point assessment.
• To comply with legislation / industry standards, individuals who wish to work in some sectors of the industry may have to complete additional certificates of training, statutory licences and health and safety approved competency cards in order to be permitted on to a worksite

Entry Requirements

Applicants will require a minimum of 3 GCSE’s at Grade D/Level 3 and above including English and maths. GCSE’s at Grade C/Level 4 and above including English and maths will be required by those candidates looking to progress within this sector. Employers also look for skills like motivation, good interpersonal skills, good communication skills and a willingness to learn and will set their own specifications depending on the role.

Delivery and Assessment

The typical duration for this apprenticeship is 27 months and you will be required to complete qualifications during the period usually with set study days. As part of the apprenticeship, there will be a number of specific skills that your employer or college tutor will monitor and observe to prove that you reached a certain level of understanding.


On completion of this apprenticeship, you could go on to work in a garden centre, park or for a large organisation like the National Trust. You could find a role as a Parks Worker, Landscape Gardener or Designer, or in a Garden Centre.
