Horticulture Apprenticeship

This course is delivered at both Matthew Boulton College and the Botanical Gardens, located in Edgbaston Birmingham.

This apprenticeship could see you working in a garden centre, park or for a large organisation like the National Trust helping to maintain gardens as part of a visitor attraction. So if you enjoy working outdoors and have a passion for plants and watching them grow this could be the apprenticeship for you. Apprentices will learn a number of topics will include maintaining sports, turf, production horticulture, parks, gardens and green spaces. Other topics covered will include health and safety, ground preparation, planting and seed sowing including establishing plants, tool care, harvest and grade produce for sale and plant propagation.

Entry Requirements

Entry criteria varies depending on the framework that you are studying and the needs of the employer, however a good level of secondary education is expected and many employers expect you to have maths and English GCSE at a C/4 grade or above. Employers also look for skills like motivation, good interpersonal skills, good communication skills and a willingness to learn and will set their own specifications depending on the role.

Delivery and Assessment

The duration of an apprenticeship will vary depending on the needs of the employer but you will be required to complete qualifications during the period usually with set study days. As part of the apprenticeship, there will be a number of specific skills that your employer or college tutor will monitor and observe to prove that you reached a certain level of understanding.


On completion of this apprenticeship, you could go on to work in a garden centre, park or for a large organisation like the National Trust. You could find a role as a Gardener, Green Keeper, Grounds Person, Parks Worker, Landscape Gardener or Designer, or in a Garden Centre.
