Children and Young People (Early Years) Foundation Degree

This course is designed for early years practitioners and teaching assistants who want to develop their professional knowledge and understanding, through a combination of theoretical and practical study. The course is delivered over 3 years, studying 30 weeks each year. An important part of the course is the ability to become a reflective practitioner – a skill which will be developed throughout the duration of your studies. Lectures are three hours in duration and are delivered by highly qualified staff who have excellent academic and practical backgrounds, with experience in children’s and young people’s services.

We offer smaller class sizes – enabling supportive quality teaching with both one to one tuition and group work. This course has a competitive fee structure, with flexible entry requirements based on your experience. This course is awarded in conjunction with the University of Derby.

It is also desirable to hold a minimum of 2 GCSEs at Grade C or above including: GCSE English: Grade C or 4 / GCSE Maths: Grade C or 4 / Are Level 2 equivalents accepted? Yes NON-ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS: You must be working directly with children aged 0-5 years. This work can either be in a voluntary or paid capacity and must be for at least two days per week. We encourage applications from students who do not meet the entry requirements outlined - but can demonstrate ability through work experience, portfolio of evidence or successful interview. At the interview applicants may be set an appropriate piece of work upon which a judgement will be made. This written task does not inform the decision regarding a place on the course but is in place to identify how students can be supported during their time at BMet. All applicants will be invited to an interview at BMet to discuss their qualifications, experience and any other related issues. The University of Derby are required to approve all applicants prior to an offer being made.

Delivery and Assessment

The course is assessed through reflective tasks, work-based activities, presentations, tutorials and the use of online resources. There are no exams, so you will be assessed using your work-based activities, creative presentations and essays. Everything you study will be relevant to your everyday work. You will also have the support of a critical friend, as well as the tutors at College.
