Applied Science Extended Certificate AAQ

The Pearson Level 3 Alternative Academic Qualification BTEC National in Applied Science (Extended Certificate) is an Alternative Academic Qualification (AAQ) designed for post-16 students with an interest in science and aiming to progress to higher education as a
route to graduate level employment.

Equivalent to one A Level in size, it is suitable for students looking to develop their applied knowledge and skills in science alongside two A Levels.

The qualification has four mandatory units:

Unit 1: Principles and Applications of Biology – Structure and function of cells and tissues, biological molecules, enzymes and their role in organisms

Unit 2: Principles and Applications of Chemistry – Structure of the Periodic Table and its implications on physical and chemical properties of substances, through analysis of different bonding methods

Unit 3: Principles and Applications of Physics – Waves and their applications; force principles and their application in transportation and construction of electrical circuits

Unit 4: Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques – Practical applications across the sciences, including chromatography, colorimetry and electrical circuits.

One of the following units will also be delivered alongside the core units:

Unit 5: Scientific Investigation Skills – Investigative research, including planning, data collection, analysis and evaluation.

Unit 6: Contemporary Issues in Science – Contemporary scientific issues including the reliability of sources of scientific information and their associated validity.

* Courses are free for 16-18s. Students aged 19 or over could be charged fees and is subject to a fee assessment. Learners on benefits in the majority of cases courses are also free. Fee assessments are completed at enrolment.

Course Length: 35 Weeks

In combination with meeting the minimum entry criteria for A-levels (5 x Grade 4s at GCSE including a 4 in GCSE Maths and a 5 in GCSE English Language), you will need Grade 44 in GCSE Science.

50% of the total qualification GLH is made up of external assessment set and marked by Pearson. Unit 1, 2 and 3 are each assessed with a 50 mark external assessment.

Unit 4, plus the additional unit 5 or 6 is assessed internally via coursework.

This qualification can lead to progression onto a number of scientific degrees including but not limited to: Biomedical, Forensics, Microbiology, Nursing, Pharmacology, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Zoology, Astronomy, Geophysics, Healthcare, and Medical physics.
