Business student takes a leap of faith with gospel dance academy
A Birmingham Metropolitan College (BMet) Business Studies student has taken a giant leap of faith by starting her own business - a unique gospel dance school – and she’s taking all the right steps to becoming a success.
Romanah Malcolm, from Erdington, has been studying for a Level 3 Diploma in Business Studies and A Level Maths at Sutton Coldfield College. She launched her own dance academy, Eloquent Praise Dance, in 2014 and became a qualified dance teacher at the age of 18.
She said: "I've been dancing for over 10 years and have achieved quite a few qualifications with the International Dance Teachers Association. I wanted to put my academic studies to good use whilst still pursuing my love of dance and setting up an academy seemed like a great way to use the skills I’m learning at college whilst passing on my expertise and knowledge of dance.
"My aim was to put something back into the community which is why the academy was set up for children aged between 4 and 17 from deprived areas. Studying at college has really inspired me to become an entrepreneur and has helped me realise that I can have a successful future by doing the things I love."
Andrew Swallow, Business Lecturer at Sutton Coldfield College, said: "Romanah is a marvellous ambassador for the college and has tapped into the entrepreneurial skills she has been taught whilst studying on her Business course. Her academy is really going from strength to strength and has been so successful that it has generated interest from large businesses such as Alton Towers who have asked them to perform an opening slot for a dance show. The business has also been nominated for a Gospel Dancers of the Year award hosted by GXXMA ministries, which is a reflection of her sheer determination and hard work."
Romanah now teaches 50 children in a weekly class and her ambition is to be a qualified primary school teacher specialising in maths whilst still continuing to run the Eloquent Praise Dance Academy. She aims to set up an Eloquent Maths Tutoring Academy to run alongside the existing business.
Eloquent Praise Dance teaches members a variety of genres of dance using significant stories from the bible, gospel songs and real life situations, sharing the gospel through praise dancing and using it to inspire, motivate and empower children.
